運転免許書の再新 • Aki Renews his Drivers License

こちらに来てからNY州の運転免許書を取ったのは、たぶん永住権を取得してからでしょうから８２年頃で２６歳の頃でしょう。日本の運転免許書と書き換える 事もできますが、生活を切り詰めては教習場に通い全て一発で通り合格でしたが１８万円余りも掛けて取得した免許書とNYではペーパー、実施試験費用で１８ ドルくらいだったと思いますが、交換したくはないと思い現地の試験を受けました。現在でも日本の自動二輪大型、普通車運転免許書を保管しています。（笑）

当 時はまだ英語の理解力が今ほどではなく、難しいかなぁと思っていたら簡単な試験問題で合格となり、一週間後の実施試験もパスしました。

一 度落としては再発行してもらい、その時に顔写真が変わりましたが、通常はIDとして一番使われているので、もし失わなければ取得した時の顔写真がこの歳に なっても使用されているのが、おかしく思いました。

テロ事件からID証明書は厳しくなったと聴いていましたが、今回の再新でも出頭は必要 ないとの事で、８年間で１２８ドルちょっとです。運輸局に行けば視覚テストは無料ですが、並ぶので近所の眼科兼眼鏡店の美しい女性ドクターに診て貰いテス ト料１０ドルですみました。
今やコンピュター画像のアルファベットを読むのですが、眼鏡なしで一番小さい行が殆ど読めたので素晴らしいとのことで した。（笑）

まだ、最新ものは届いていませんが、下の顔であと八年間いられます。

Here in New York, our Drivers licenses have to be renewed every seven years, and it's renewal time for Aki. He remembered the first time he applied for a drivers license here; because his English skills weren't that great he was a little nervous about the written test, but he easily passed. Lots of drivers here are immigrants and don't speak perfect English, so the written test is geared more toward visual recognition. He also remembered that he only paid $18.00 for his first license (about 150 years ago, how time flies) - and this time it was more than $180.00 to renew.

They never redo the photo IDs, though, and since he was about 30 in the photo above, he's worried that he's changed too much to be easily recognizable for ID purposes.

I think he's wrong, though…
Yeah, he's acquired a few "character lines" and gray hairs (he says I'm to blame for that), but to me it's still the same old charming kawaii-ko-chan face.
